NEWSLETTER
1 - July 2006
Yeah, so it's been way too long since my last newsletter.
I'm not even sure when the last one went out. Will you
ever forgive me? A lot of things have been shakin' here
at Penelope Illustration Headquarters, so that's my big
excuse. Busy-ness. I'm lame, I know.
I'm trying a new format for the newsletter, because this
is a good way to keep track of them and I can give you
pictures along with the news. I hope you'll like it.
NEWS
ITEMS
Communication Arts Feature
July 1st the new Illustration Annual hit bookstores and
I was fortunate enough to grace one of the Fresh Feature
sections. My mug and 10 pieces of my work were staring
back at me when I flipped to it and then my heart did
a flip, too. I am so honored. To order your very own copy,

this link.
Mini-redesign of Penelopeillustration.com
I tend to redesign my site a lot. I find it sort of relaxing
(no kiddin'). This time I just went in for some minor
tweaks and an update of the portfolio. There is new work
up and with the new thumbnails, it's easier to choose
a specific image if you are looking for one. Also, a new
inspiration
page has
been added with all the projects, pictures and links all
in one spot. I hope it will inspire you.
CLIENT
WORK
Baltimore Sun
A few months back Baltimore
Sun signed me on to do one illustration per
week for their Life Column. So I've been enjoying reading
the various stories and trying to complement in with an
illustration. I am particularly proud of the one on the
left.
After the story ran, the author emailed me to say that
the likeness to the main character was uncanny, and I
was shocked because I just made her up in my head. Funny
how things work like that sometimes.
AARP
I also just finished a big project for the AARP. They
hired me to illustrate a brochure that raises awareness
about typical scams that older people can fall victim
to. It was interesting (and scary!) to learn about all
the various ways the bad guys can get you. See
the illustrations here.
Chase Bank
Chase Bank put an assignment to BaM
advertising to do an ad celebrating Harlem week in the
New York Times. And BaM
called me, requesting an illustration the size of king
kong's bicep. Okay, I'm exaggerating slightly, but it
was big. It runs in the NY Times on August first, center
spread, but you can see a preview of it on the left there.
It was a pretty neato assignment: to show the growth and
positive developments that have been happening in Harlem...
hence, the flower with brownstone petals.
GOINGS
ON
HOW Conference
In June I attended the HOW conference alongside my rep
and we preached the gospel of illustration. We learned
that many designers have never worked with an illustrator
before and are a bit intimidated by the process. So now
I am working on a fun little piece to try to educate people.
That's all I can really say about it now. Shhhh!
At the conference we gave out special Tshirts I designed
and they were a big hit. They are super soft, american
apparel shirts, and if you'd like one, you
can purchase it here.
And lastly, click
here to view the pictures of the four days in Vegas.
LopiePop!
All the prints have sold out. So I am working on some
new prints that will be released this fall. Stay tuned
for those!
REQUEST
FOR HELP!
I Am A Canver Survivor Postcards
Many of you probably already know that my sister-in-law,
Alison, was diagnosed with stage
four cancer a few weeks ago. She is still undergoing many
tests and scans, and they are working on a treatment plan
for her right now. She's being so strong during all of
this, but could really use your support. Here's how:
Christine Miller (aka Swirly Girl) has an ongoing project
called 52
Figments. Each week she posts a question
and participants answer on a postcard and send them to
her. She then uploads them all into an online gallery.
This week, in support of Alison,
she has requested that all participants create a postcard
with the message "YOU ARE A CANCER SURVIVOR."
Christine will post all the postcards she receives on
flickr, as usual, but she is also going to box up all
the cards and mail them to Alison.
Imagine Alison getting a whole box full of beautiful postcards
with those words "You are a cancer survivor."
I think it will boost her spirits and help her know that
we are all behind her as she beats this awful illness.
Click here to learn how to participate. Please do!
That's it! Thanks for
reading.
